Domestic Metering Innovation
Interest in domestic metering innovation has recently been stimulated by a consultation document, issued on 1 February 2006, by Ofgem. This document sought to examine the potential benefits of what have become known as "smart meters". In conjunction with another independent consultant, Lidcast Data responded to the consultation. Our response, together with the original document may be seen on the Ofgem website, as of April 2006.
The issues raised in the document and published responses were wide-ranging. In summary, there appears to be a need for the introduction of smart metering to be promoted and for this to be achieved on a commercial basis rather than through heavy regulation.
Rather than detail a long and wordy rationale for the most appropriate direction for smart metering we have chosen to advance herein a paper that envisions what a smart meter could be and how it could be introduced into the industry.
